Duigan states that 'Flirting' is semi-autobiographical, only in as far as the circumstance (i.e not stretching as far as the characterisation). The author percieves that Duigan successfully portrays a deeply felt sense of teenage agony in 'Flirting' which he considers is rare for films of this form. 'Flirting' is seen as acutely representative of adolescent experience without resorting to the narrative devices which plague so many American films of this form. For example, Duigan comments on his decision to expand 'Flirting's' thematic preoccupations beyond issues of race. Duigan's history is outlined and brief reference is made to his plans for the future.
