This article discusses the way in which the boarding school is an unnatural environment for a person to come of age. The boarding school is a location which has been home to many a 'persecution of individuality saga', and Ryan acknowledges the way in which Duigan treats this rather tired thematic preoccupation.
According to Ryan, 'Flirting' is separated from the pack by its treatment of social issues (ie racism and conformity) within the context of a 'genre' recognised for its preoccupation with the lead character as the centre of his/her own universe, with little reference made to experiences beyond the immediate narrative scope of the character. 'Flirting', on the other hand elevates itself in the mind of the reviewer due to its broader thematic implications and its wide narrative scope. Ryan states that Kidman may have moved on to bigger things, but not necessarily better things.
This article was also published in the Ballarat Courier (28/11/92 - page 34). The editor of this publication saw to it that all comment of value was removed.
This is largely because, the editor of the Ballarat Courier was only interested in including those sections of the article which praise the film and in particlar, Australia's prized export, Nicole Kidman. I strongly recommend the Bendigo Advertiser version of the article. Although it is still concerned with what an "American critic" has to say, it does, at least offer some comment whose subtext is more than 'it must be good if the American's like it!'.
