Comments An entertaining insight into how a quite obviously 'older' reviewer (who states that he only reads Rolling Stone for the political issues!) would comprehend Oz which was destined for a much younger audience.

While McGuinness tries to parallel Oz a little too much with what he refers to as the 'original' - the 1939 cinematic version of The Wizard of Oz'-
he is a pleasure to read, if only for his indulgence in 'waxing lyrical' and niceties.

Yet, upon reading his final surmising that Oz is entertaining "if only for its sweet-natured prose and sentimentality", one wonders if ol' P.P. was out on a choc-top break when Dorothy claims (in not so dulcet tones) that "fame and fortune fuck you up". Then again, perhaps he had popcorn in his ears (a serious occupational hazard for movie reviewers) and misheard Dorothy cursing a much more sweet-natured (albeit slangy) 'muck'!!!
Synopsis On the defence for the film, in his review McGuinness chides the 'pulpit preachers' who have damned the film for its indecency and claims that Oz is a model of "...honesty and sincerity which expresses attitudes which can only be described as moral in a way which kids can understand and sympathise with".

In his review, McGuinness heralds Garry Waddell's performance as the 'Lion' as "..much better than Bert Lahr in the original"
