The author recognises the fact that there is a difference between 'The Year My Voice Broke' and other films seen to belong to the archetypal 'rite-of-passage' genre. The difference is of course, the films inherent 'Australianess', amongst other things such as; adaptation of genre resulting in the audience's inability to place expectations in particluar modes of construction or sites of familiar signification. These ideas are only brushed upon, and the article tends to draw its focus from the notion that the 'rite-of-passage' is commonly defined by its preoccupation with sexuality (an element overlooked in many articles discussing nostalgia or specificity in relation to the film.)
An interesting observation is made with regard to authorship in the Australian cinema. Caputo recognises a thematic preoccupation inherent in Duigan's work prior to his affiliation with Kennedy Miller which is departed on in his collaborative projects. This is an interesting point of analysis for those familiar with Kennedy Miller's somewhat formulaic approach to audience reception and narrative scheme. The Kennedy Miller approach is perhaps defined by productions which have very little sense of fatalism but rather draw upon elements of mythic transcendence.
