Zubrycki mentions that one's personal experience of any event shapes the way one sees it, edits it and narrates it.
True of filmmaking and also the way we sort out images in our heads and concoct memories. |
Synopsis |
This is the paper that resulted from the 2000 NSW Premierâs History Awards Address given by Tom Zubrycki.
Zubrycki talks about how the relationship between a documentary filmmaker and a contemporary historian are related. He discusses how his style of filmmaking is a process of discovery and finding the drama in everyday life. Zubrycki mentions his films that deal with workers and trade unions, his investigation of Australian migrant stories and how documentary filmmakers can become counsellors and advocates for their subjects.
He concludes with a warning about the future direction of documentary filmmaking and the role it plays in Australiaâs cultural landscape.
