Film exhibition industry
Rise in popularity of the DVD
Video piracy |
Synopsis |
Zion's substantial article explores the current state of the film exhibition industry and the reasons surrounding the drop in box office returns. Zion identifies, and then goes onto further substantiate, four of the most commonly cited reasons affecting the industry. These include the popularity of the DVD and other entertainment formats- "the average price of DVDs fell from $34.46 in 2000 to $23.14 last year...(while) iPods, MP3 players and to an extent mobile ring tones are draining pocket money and entertainment budgets." Video piracy- "estimated to have cost the local industry almost $200 million a year, or 8 per cent of the total revenue earned from film and DVD." The quality of films- Joel Pearlman from Roadshow Film Distributors was quoted saying that "the product in the first couple of months of the year was somewhat disappointing". And lastly the cinema experience itself had declined (rising costs, quality of venue, etc.). Zion highlights, through the use of further statistics and comments from industry experts, why so many independent cinemas have closed in recent times (including the Valhalla and Chauvel in Sydney and the Lumiere in Melbourne). |
