Comments Film exhibition industry
Synopsis Coslovich and Millar explore the decline of the film exhibition industry in Melbourne's CBD, as audiences opt for cinemas in suburban areas. The tradition of travelling to the city to see latest releases has all but disappeared and been replaced by suburban multiplexes that boast better quality theartes and unprecented access to new release films. Among the dire statistics listed in the article are: "In dollar terms, the gross box-office takings at city cinemas dropped from $87 million in 1988 to $57.5 million in 2001, while takings in the suburbs rose from $68.5 million to $483.4 million."
