Declining cinema attendance rates |
Synopsis |
Report on the Australian International Movie Convention focusing on the decline in cinema attendance rates. A survey conducted by Nielson EDI found that 31% of the 18-24 year old demographic are going to the movies less than before. Among the speculation as to why 18-24 year olds have been drawn away from the cinema include the rise in popularity of DVDs, video games, the internet and other entertainment options.
Stephen Basil-Jones from Dreamworks also said that a lack of blockbuster hits could also be to blame for the current lull in the industry. Basil-Jones also stated that a more sensible approach to the early release of movies on DVD would also help cinemas. "We cannot have the consumer think the DVD is going to be out in one month, two months' time . . . they just won't go (to the cinemas)."
