Comments Of particular note, Liponen, Jefimova and Rebelo write on the social experience of the cinema; “above all, (‘cinema-going’) is a social activity that extends from the animation movies to war, adventure, and romantic movies to the independent cinema. Today going to the cinema is not a special event anymore, but a way to relax, go on a date, socialize and experience fear, astonishment, surprise, joy or sadness through the screen”. Liponen, Jefimova and Rebelo continue “rather than selling individual films, cinema is best understood as having sold a habit, a certain type of socialized experience”.
Synopsis Liponen, Jefimova and Rebelo in “The Notion of ‘Cinema-going’” examine ‘cinema-going’ as a form of ‘leisure culture’. With particular regard to the cinemas of Finland, Estonia and Portugal (but with implications within a global framework), the authors compare and contrast patterns of consumption, such as to determine a ‘common profile’; one that is intended to depict ‘cinema-going’ as a distinct form of ‘culture’. Referring to Peter Stockinger’s concept of the ‘social actor’ (the term ‘social actor’ defined as ‘a group of people who refer to a common cognitive framework, to a common culture’.), Liponen, Jefimova and Rebelo explore those characteristics of ‘cinema-going’ which they contend transmigrate all whom participate in the activity (characteristics which, according to Liponen, Jefimova and Rebelo, all cinema-going audiences must share if the process is to be accurately defined as a ‘culture’).
