Of particular note, Liponen, Jefimova and Rebelo write on the social experience of the cinema; âabove all, (âcinema-goingâ) is a social activity that extends from the animation movies to war, adventure, and romantic movies to the independent cinema. Today going to the cinema is not a special event anymore, but a way to relax, go on a date, socialize and experience fear, astonishment, surprise, joy or sadness through the screenâ. Liponen, Jefimova and Rebelo continue ârather than selling individual films, cinema is best understood as having sold a habit, a certain type of socialized experienceâ. |
| Synopsis |
Liponen, Jefimova and Rebelo in âThe Notion of âCinema-goingââ examine âcinema-goingâ as a form of âleisure cultureâ. With particular regard to the cinemas of Finland, Estonia and Portugal (but with implications within a global framework), the authors compare and contrast patterns of consumption, such as to determine a âcommon profileâ; one that is intended to depict âcinema-goingâ as a distinct form of âcultureâ. Referring to Peter Stockingerâs concept of the âsocial actorâ (the term âsocial actorâ defined as âa group of people who refer to a common cognitive framework, to a common cultureâ.), Liponen, Jefimova and Rebelo explore those characteristics of âcinema-goingâ which they contend transmigrate all whom participate in the activity (characteristics which, according to Liponen, Jefimova and Rebelo, all cinema-going audiences must share if the process is to be accurately defined as a âcultureâ). |
