Synopsis |
Interview with former detective inspector in charge of the Crime Surveillance Unit of the Victoria Police, Rod Porter who strongly suspcts Chopper's Detective Downie character is based on him.
Porter worked closely with Read who used his incredible network to inform the Unit of various criminals and their whereabouts. Over twelve months Read helped put away some of the state's top dealers and the relationship only ended when Read murdered Siam Ozerkam at Bojangles in 1987. Porter claims life was a big joke to Read who wasn't afraid of anything and desired confidence and protection from the unit.
Porter praises 'Chopper' describing it as a 'good piece of social commentary'. His only concerns are that, to his knowledge, Read did not beat up women or touch drugs and reinterates that Read has only ever injured criminals. |
