| Synopsis |
This paper is one of the Australian sociological series established by the Department of Sociology at La Trobe University. The aim of the paper is to discuss the long tradition of mateship and its present state in Australia. The two most significant and unquie characteristics of Australian mateship are that mateship developed in a country that has not been overwhelmingly patriarchal and that has had a strong egalitarian tradition. Moreover, there are some research findings in the paper. Those findings indicate that mateship often has a negative impact on male-female relationships in gerenal and marriage in particular. |
