The Independent is a localized news paper for Footscray and the surrounding areas. The newspaper covered all areas of interest to the population from cinema to sales. The Independent was aimed at a broad audience, utilizing cartoons and an easy to understand writing style. Each issue was approximately 4 pages in length.
During the 20's the Trocadero is mentioned several times in the Independent. The local paper has listings of new films the cinema would be showing that week. As an example, the Trocadero is mentioned on page three of four in the 1923-12-2 issue of the Independent along with other cinemas in the area, such as the Barkley and the Grand. The article states that the Trocadero would be playing "Under Oath," "Nerves and Husbands" and the last screening of "Sonny" that week. The article also contains information on the stars that appear in the films mentioned.
The article in the Independent is slightly larger than the article for other cinemas, suggesting that the Trocadero was more popular than the Barkley or the Grand at the time. Or at least had more appeal to the audience of the Independent. |
