This Article attempts to contextualize the importance of the independant documentary on an international level in relation to mainstream, corporatized documentaries, providing a sociological understanding of an independant film culture within the industry. The article is informative in tone through its dependancy upon facts and statistics provided by ranging Academic and industry-based sources, and provides an ubias comparison on contemporary theoretical arguments addressing issues of counterculture. The intention behind this text is in support of more funding to independant film projects by suggesting forces of corruption lie within some sectors of the Australian Film industry. A snap-shot of where the contemporary idependant documentary stands in Australian cuture is interpreted throuaugh facts and opinions of intelectuals and experts wthin the industry. The under-appreciation for this genre of film is suggested as being an impediment to the growth and development of an Australian cultral identity, one that John Hughes has been a Major contributor since te 1970's. Hughes' personal reflections on issues of funding, distribution, and cencorship of an independant film culture in relation to his own projects provides an examples of the challenges imposed on future independant filmmakers, and attitudes to be adapted in order to overcome these challenges.
