In this new article, the main focus is the events that proceeded when the owner of the then Capitol Cinema wanted to lock up the cinema indefinitely.
The entire situation began when the owners sent in a request to the Melbourne City Council to demolish the stairs to the Capitol theatre where they can have more space to expand the Capitol Arcade (a shopping strip).
Removing the stairs meant that there wouldnât be any access to the Capitol Theatre. This would have been a great loss not only for the city of Melbourne but to the world as an architectural treasure of world significance.
Tony Sprogis, then company secretary of the Capitol Arcade Pty Ltd (Owners) was quoted saying âthe Capitol theatre was not a viable cinema or theatre space. Single-screen venues were over and cinemas like the Capitol could not compete with multiplexes that now dominate this industryâ.
Since the Capitol theatre is protected by state and national heritage listings and the Melbourne council who also had to represent the Heritage listings in Victoria, immediately refused the permission to demolish the stairs.
