Synopsis |
Pike approaches his thesis with the belief that "Australian film-makers should be able to participate with confidence and security in the film trade in their own country", and examines how Cinesound's success as a production company can be explained.
Within Pike's comprehensive work, information can be found on the organisation and structure of Cinesound, its relationship to Greater Union and how the industry as a whole operated (such as distribution, publicity, trade publications).
Information on 'Thoroughbred' (1936) does not receive the same analysis that other Cinesound releases receive, but valuable resources are cited along with various statistics and a summary of Twelvetrees' stay in Australia, as well as a synopsis of the film and the genres it draws from.
Pike's interpretation of the eugenics theme in 'Thoroughbred' is apologetic in nature, defending the film as anti-eugenic when in fact there is much evidence to dismantle this view.
