The article looks at examples of Indigenous media production particularly focusing on the Warlpiri Media Association and the CBC Northern Service's unit. The main theme is to "banish the notion of persuing an "idealist authenticity" of indigenousness and instead , consider the possiblity of thinking through difference that does not exhaust itself in backwardness."
It looks at the appropriation of technology by indigenous communities in a way that fly's in the face of technological determinism. He sees the development of indigenously controlled media production as one that "engages with a construction of identity as well as attempts to reclaim control of histories and knowledges." The most important feature of the article is it's recognition of the diversity and heterogeneity inherent in all forms Indigenous media production and the ways in which the technology has appropriated itself into indigenous communities. It is a well reasoned commentary that provides useful examples. |
