An engaging article, whereby Sandra Hall states that this modern-day Oz "is a highly efficient exercise in taking the gee-whiz out of fantasy and replacing it with a very jaded so-what"(56) However, like many reviewers of the time, Hall assumes that the film will be viewed by a younger audience of pre-teens, when really the subject matter of 'Oz' is more suited to those several years older. |
Synopsis |
Hall opens her article with "..if, as teachers and librarians often say in a sad way, modern children don't appreciate fantasy the new Australian rock musical Oz should delight 11-year olds everywhere, for it's a sort of social realist version of the old Oz story"(56)
She continues with the statement that there is "..no wide-eyed look for the new Dorothy, and you won't catch her with a catch in her voice, either. She has a slouch and her lip curls whenever she is trying to figure out what the hell the creep she's with is going to do next"(56)
