The author writes about 'Flirting' in an affectionate way, and like many other reviewers, makes use of the words; charming, shrewd and tender for example. Overall, it is a positive review with recognition made of Duigan's aims for realism in both 'The Year My Voice Broke' and 'Flirting'. The author makes the distinction between American films of the rite-of-passage 'genre', and Duigan's films which are seem to comply with the conventions of the genre, whilst retaining a sense of individuality and a certain 'Australianess' which is reflected in the scripting and direction of both films.
