I think that something was lost in the translation from American newsreporting into normal English. Reading the article shows a rather odd idea of the film, with Muriel painted as a social misfit, that becomes a "bride for hire". This and more clouds a rather inacurate portrayal of the films intentions and show a lack of cultural understanding.

The article does a bad job of reading Muriel motivation for marriage and miscalculates her escape with her fathers cheque. On the whole it is a strange read from an outside perspective.
