Comments This article discusses the standard of competition in the 1990 Australian Film Institute Awards, with particular reference made to The Big Steal and Flirting. The author describes Flirting as "funny" and "likeable". The film is likened to a 1950's pop song, in other words brief and melodramatic. The author expresses moments of unease in their reception of the film. Perhaps this is due to the combination of humour and pathos integral to the film's wider success. The film does indeed attempt to touch on issues which are no laughing matter, though deals with them in a humourous light. This is why the film becomes a little unsettling at the possibility of Thandiwe's death. The sudden shift in emotional tone makes the film somewhat difficult to follow, in terms of identification.
A funny point to note in this article is the author's perception regarding the physical appearance of the teenagers represented. A strange feature of this film is the way in which the women are so much better looking than the men. I will leave you to ponder!
