The author makes a distinction between a film being classified as a "sequal" as opposed to the "second part of a trilogy". LePetit casts aspertions as to whether it is this distinction that prompted the film's success (a flowing three part narrative, each part with its own narrative trajectory, rather than a recreation or addition to a single film). The humour in 'The Year My Voice Broke' is likened to the humour in 'Flirting' which the author believes successfully evokes the pain and agony of a boy's rite-of-passage. Praise is attributed to the performance of all lead and supporting cast, in addition to the unpretentious nature of the film as a whole.
