A valuable source for names and production details on Cinesound films not recorded elsewhere. Hall's instinctve publicist side had to apparently be restrained by the author when writing this book, but to some degree it still prevails.
While his life was full of career achievements,on less successfull moments and descisions of his professional life, Hall is incredibly coy and in interview situations chose his words with incredible care. Hall's tendency to ingeniously cover his more embarrasing tracks is of course practiced in this book. (For instance, Hall's perception of Cinesound's apparent control of the media is not nessesarily accurate).
The other valuable aspect to this autobiography is that Hall is reasonably generous in discussing the more contraversial moments at Cinesound that would otherwise be lost with time, topics that in interview situations he often refused to elaborate on.
NOTE: Be wary of details in relation to accuracy. For example, when speaking of the making of 'Thoroughbred', the role Stanton played, that of Midget Martin, is mistakenly attributed to Lance Skuthorpe in Ken Hall's autobiography (Hall,The Inside Story 1977:85). Stanton explains that Skuthorpe was involved in the stunt, but in tripping the horse, not taking the stumble. Considering Stanton is credited as Midget Martin in 'Thoroughbred', and claims to have been involved in the stunts, (Sunday Herald, 7/2/82) he is more credible as a primary source, and the publishers of Hall's autobiography have been, dare I say it, editorially slack.
Also Note: the consequent reprinting of this book was titled "Australian Film: The Inside Story" (Summit Books, 1977, 1980) |
