Synopsis The article talks about the 1950s being a sign of the discontinuous tradition of Australian cinema. Cunningham discusses the downturn in film production in the early 1950s, the closure of Ealing and the lack of government interest in the film industry and the advent of television. He talks about the Location Film and writes a lengthy discourse on The Overlanders. Cunningham also discusses how film festivals and societies begin to flourish in this era; the shift in social importance of ‘film for national development and its replacement by a perceived cultural importance of ‘film as art’.
