Comments According to George Florence (as interviewed by Royce Millar), “the (film exhibition) industry is facing a major crisis that needs to be addressed. Where is new investment going to come from when people can get this stuff pirated for nothing?”
Synopsis Royce Millar, the ‘City Editor’ for “The Age” newspaper writes in “Curtains for the Astor?” that “the future of the much-loved Astor cinema in St Kilda is in doubt with the heritage-listed theatre on the market for the first time in decades.” Millar interviews George Florence, current proprietor regarding his “25-year labour of love” and notes that despite Mr. Florence having run the ‘Astor Theatre’ since 1982, “for the first time since Mr. Florence took over, the business lost money last financial year (2004-2005)”. Royce Millar’s interview with George Florence highlights factors including a “declining loyalty” amongst “baby boomers”, “DVD”, ‘elaborate’ “home theatre”, and increasing piracy via digital distribution, alongside “a run of poor quality films in the first half of this year (2005)”.
