Coslovich reports upon the closing of Melbourne cinema The Lumiere and the current state of the exhibition industry in Australia (with special focus on independent cinemas). The writer also cites the recent Australian International Movie Convention on the Gold Coast where exhibitors gathered to discuss the current state of the industry. Among some of the problems voiced by exhibitors included: "the proliferation of home-entertainment systems and cheap DVD players, the earlier release of films on DVD, the ability to download films from the internet, and the hoard of mediocre product that has recently come out of Hollywood." |
