Synopsis |
This chapter gives a comprehensive oversight of Australia's film distribution and exhibition industry from its' origins in the early 1930s through until the mid-1980s when the book was published. Dermody and Jacka trace the history of the industry by focusing on the development of the three major exhibition chains (Hoyts, GUO and Village)in Australia. The writers also explore the links between these American-controlled exhibition chains and the film distributors in Australia, revealing that many were subsidiaries of U.S. majors including United Artists, Columbia, 20th Century Fox and Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Dermody and Jacka then examine how this vertical integration of the industry has affected the exhibition of Australian films. The writers then provide an extensive analysis of how two such players in the industry (Village/Roadshow and Greater Union) dealt with Tariff Board recommendations and home-grown films. |
