Title Teenagers & Teenpics: The Juvenilisation of American Movies in the 1950's
Author(s)Thomas Doherty
Publication Date 00-00-1988
Comments Film titles and Key names contained throughout this book are numerous but fleeting.

I found this book useful for developing a clear understanding of how and why the 'teenage' film originated, why it was continually perpetuated and how it exploits a mass teenage audience.

It is American in focus but since the genre itself developed in America, there is no way of avoiding such foundational origins.

Discussions and theories generated throughout the book, particularly in the introduction, may easily be applied to the Australian context.
Synopsis Doherty discusses the rise of the mass teenage audience in the 1950's and the film industries subsequent focus on this commercial group. He found such a phenomenon to be market/profit driven which he believed led to the expliotation of teenage consumers.

Throughout the book, Doherty discusses many theoretical issues surrounding 'teen' film's appeal, themes and success.

Very interesting stuff!!!
