This book is a historical investigation of Australian audiences over the past one hundred years.
Collins talks about the appropriation of the American film product throughout the book itself while this chapter deals specifically with audiences and commodification (see below). |
Synopsis |
Here, Collins discusses the emergence of the 'mass teenage audience' which occured in Australia (and across the western world) in the 1950's. She offers a range of statistics suggesting that cinema patronage during this time reflected a movement away from 'the universal' audience to a segmented, predominately teenage audience.
As a result of this phenominon, Collins talks about the film idustries self-conscious effort to cater to the 'new audience' by making films 'dripping' in notions of teenage rebellion!
She then humerously lunges into the social implications of this movement by detailing resposes to the 'roudy teenage cinema audience.' |
