Title Tuesday's Gone: The Nostalgic Teen Film
Author(s)Lesley Speed
Issue 1

Comments This article is a very in-depth analysis of the range of theories attached to notions of the 'Teenflick.'

While American examples and theorists dominate it's content, Speed's discussions and arguments may certainly be applied to the Australian adaptation of the film genre.

Given the strong theoretical focus of the article, it is at times quite a difficult read - well worth the second read over!

For anyone wishing to begin a study on the 'teenage condition' in film, Speed offers a teriffic theoretical foundation from which to begin from!

References to the article itself are readily atainable at most libraries. I found no difficulties in attaining a copy.
Synopsis At the commencement of her study, Speed is concerned with the 'Nostaligic Teen Film' (vein of film's widely concerned with 'past' experiences of youth at the level of narration), however she also recognises another, more prominent type: the 'rebellion' teen film.

By summarising and examining a number of theoretical responses to these types of films from a number of prominent theorists, Speed discusses the genre in terms of its audience appeal, it's re-occuring themes and settings, male dominance (spectatorship), central driving forces, narrative authority and it's historical rise and reception.

An idea often plaguing Speed's discussions, is the notion of freedom and a resistance to controlling authorities prevailing in these 'teenage' discourses. Speed widely attributes the genre's appeal to this notion believing it to endorse an escapist and/or nostalgic lure.

Perhaps the most helpful theory Speed discusses, is that by Australian theorist Adrian Martin. He is widely concerned with the semantic and syntactic axes the 'teen film' genre perpetuates. Martin's model, as depicted by Speed, offers a unique way of thinking about implicit structures existing within a 'teen film' text.
