This is a colourful and very personal account of one man's journey through the 'teenpics' of the eighties. It is a terrific source in any study of the 'teenpic' genre offering a great, easy to read account of films aimed at an American teenage audience during the 1980's.In this sense, if it is American historical context you are after for your study on films for or/and about young people, this would be the place to go! Especially considering that the 'teenpic' is largely an American phenomenon which exploded in the 1980's. I found it useful to when it came to exploring Australia's response and adaptation to this popular film style. |
Synopsis |
In this introductory section of the book, Bernstein introduces the 'teenpic' genre in terms of its character development (or lack thereof), re-occuring locations and themes and their one-dimensional tendancies which, he argues, are the genre's major source of attraction.
He also notes 80's ledgend John Hughes contribution to the genre and discusses the 'teenpics' role as mirroring adolescent fantasies and satisfying a social yerning for freedom and understanding. |
