This is a great article for historisizing the 'teenpic' genre at its place of birth - America around the 1950's. It's central concerns and areas of discussion are easily transferrable to discussions relating to the Australian adaptation of the 'teenpic' genre.
I managed to hunt down only a copy of the article in an 'AFI library file,' so exact page numbers and volumes are not verified. |

Pareles offers a list and commentary on 'landmark' teen films noting each films central adolescent overtones and themes. He then continues to outline some sociological issues dealt with by the films which he sees as being tantamount to the films success and appeal.
Pareles also disscuss the adult perception of teen films arguing the genre may well contain a universal 'cross generational' appeal.
The genre's dependancy on the portreyal of adolescent deliquency is noted by Pareles as a major component to the genre's themes and success. He writes "They (teen protagonists) rule their own jungle and there is nothing an adult can do."
