This report provides general insights into the Australian public's perceptions of violence and presents a vague indication of what is considered tolerable. As Chopper mixes violence and comedy, the discussion of this topic including specific quotes from panelists and references to other films (i.e. Reservoir Dogs) is useful. |
| Synopsis |
This report details the responses to three pre-release films by community assessment panels in Sydney, Wagga Wagga and Brisbane.
These panels were designed to investiage the degree to which classification decisions by the Classification Board reflect current community standards.
The report details methodology, classification decisions by the panels and by the board, classifiable elements which include violence, language, sex and adult themes, interpretation by the panels of the guidelines and comparisons between the board and the panels.
The research demonstrated a high level of agreement between the board and the panel as from the nine films classified by the panels, six received the same classification by the panels as the board.
Overall, violence was the main concern of the panels and many panelists expressed concern about the escalation in film violence, the 'copy cat' effect, the use of comedy to diffuse violence and the use of knives. |
