Synopsis Mark 'Chopper' Read suggested to Dominik that Bana play him and Bana, who has spent time with Chopper comments that
he has some sort of people perception and his skill lies in picking people and potentially knowing what they can and cant do.

"There is a reason that all of this has happened around him. There is something about this person and, love him or hate him, like it or lump it, it's an unavoiable fact. People don't end up with this kind of mythology for no reason".

The article surmises Chopper's activities following his 1998 release including crude comments made to Alan Jones and a drunk and disorderly appearance on the ABC's, McFeast Live.

Dominik claims he saw Chopper as an interesting character as underneath he seemed fragile and lonely - traits common in many violent people.

Dominik claims that although crime is often seen from the victims perspective, violence has an effect on the perpetrator who is the problem with the crime, not the victim and thus, their emotions are important.

Dominik seeks to reinterpret ideas about criminality in cinema. He states that in film people are either portrayed as violent like Hannibal Lecter or they have some kind of ideological justification for their actions and both are comforting for an audience.

Dominik comments on the resistance to the film from distributors pointing out the screenplay is far less sensational than any of Read's books and that those who saw the commercial potential in the film were disappointment at how the script focused on character rather than blood and guts.

The film has faced condemnation and with Bana cast as Read, Mel Barnett of the Victims of Crime Assistance League stated in early 1999 that "Murder isn't a laughing matter".

The remainder of the article focuses on Bana; his response to the script and the time he devoted to researching the role and transforming himself physically to become Read.

The article also seperately lists other films of the "crooks and prison life" genre.
