Read was not involved in consultation work for the film as this article claims but refused to collaborate with Dominik and his crew, preferring to see how others saw him. The several thousand dollars donated to the police charity fund was payment for the rights to his book. |
Synopsis |
Chopper is causing controversy even before its release as victims groups and Tasmania's Minister Assisting the Premier on the Status of Women, Fran Bladel have attacked the film.
Chopper which is rated R includes scenes of Read beating his girlfriend, killing another prisoner and having his ears cut off.
Read was apparently paid several thousand dollars for early consultation work on the movie and reportedly donated most of the proceeds to the children's charity fund administered by police, Bluey Day.
A spokesman for Palace Films said, "it paints a balanced picture of a guy who is kind of psychotic but who is human and still got this great sense of humour". He stated 'Gladiator' was more violent than Chopper and couldn't understand Chopper's R-rating.
