Title The Truman Show
Author(s)Rob Lowing,Tom Ryan
Publication Date 27-09-1998
Page Number 7
Comments Film review with four and a half star rating.
Synopsis Described as having all the markings of an American classic, despite being written and co-produced by a New Zealander (Andrew Niccol) and directed by an Australian (Peter Weir). Compares Jim Carrey's role of Truman as being like that of James Stewart's in It's a Wonderful Life. Also makes references to The Twilight Zone. Gives a basic outline of the plot of the film, and describes the plot as not being particularly original. But what makes it work is "the satiric sharpness of the details" and the fact that despite exploiting Truman for 30 years, the audience recovers in time to cheer Truman on when he tries to leave.
