An edited extract of a talk given by David Malouf at the Seymour Centre, a part of a series called Transformations. |
Synopsis |
Renowned author David Malouf talks about how the products of Hollywood have influenced lives. There's a very interesting passage that deals specifically with The Truman Show. Malouf talks about how the film tackles the subject of illusion. He argues that the fact that we know something about Truman that he doesn't raises doubts about our participation as an audience. He describes Truman as a "victim of our addiction to figures" who exists only for the pleasure it gives us to watch him. The film puts the audience on the screen alongside Truman, so that the real audience of the film can witness the hunger of the audience within the film. |
