Comments The fifth biggest film festival in the world, the Melbourne International Film Festival spent 20 years of its history at the Palais from 1962 to 1982.

Before settling at the Palais, the festival spent time at a number of different venues including... Melbourne University, Brighton's Dendy Theatre and the Rivoli in Camberwell.

During the '60s censorship regulations meant that many films were edited. The extent of the censorship resulted in filmmaker, Stig Bjorkman withdrawing his 1969 film, I Love, You Love after censors wanted to excise 30 seconds of film.

The next controversy to rock MIFF was in 1974 when a Michelangelo Antonioni documentary on communist China had to be withdrawn after complaints from the Chinese Embassy and anonymous bomb threats.

Throughout the '70s hardly any Australian films premiered at MIFF. Many producers and distributors feared their box office would be tainted by association with an "elitist" festival.
