The Palais is now more well known for the concerts that it holds, but there is still the St Kilda Film Festival.
In 2003, 600 shorts were entered into the competition. Australian writers, directors and performers such as David Wenham, Marcus Graham, Barry Otto, John Stanton, Jimeoin, Mark Seymour, Pia Miranda, James Reyne, and Dave O'Neill were all featured in the line-up.
Also included in 2003 was a 20-year retrospective featuring the best of the St Kilda Film Festival. It featured work by local filmmakers including Jane Campion (The Piano) and P.J Hogan (Muriel's Wedding, My Best Friend's Wedding).
