It was interesting that such outrage was directed at Michael thornill in response to beliefs that he wasted tax-payers money on film that was shunned by critics. It is fascinating that the Premier at the time, Neville Wran backed Thornhills judgement in allocating excessive funding for the filming of âThe Journalist and even went as far as referring to him as one of Ausraliaâs most distinguished film directors.â This statement suggests to me that the author must be a fan of Thornhillâs work despite horrible reviews that âThe Journalistâ received. The article also acknowledges that Thornhill may have abused his rights as director of the New South Wales Film Corporation. The whole situation comes across a quite serious considering that the matter was brought up in parliament. The court transcript featured a great deal of negative publicity for Thornhill, which would have made it difficult to find anyone to finance his projects in the future. It also was incredibly ridiculous of one of the speakers to suggest that Thornhill pay for the losses himself. Despite such a negative response from cinema goers, the Premierâs comments in the article are sure to protect the reputation of the Australian film industry, citing recent Australian films that delivered box office success. |
