However the Kirby family saw the countries economic situation as an opportunity, for change. After working in the automotive business Gorge Kirby decided to pick up and move. George and his family traveled for hours, traveling from Geelong to Parkdale. Where they would rent their first cinema, the âWintergardenâ. The âWintergardenâ was an old silent cinema. They soon realised it would need a lot of work, as they began to re-build the cinemas technology with a film plant. The Kirbyâs were able to purchase a second hand film plant. Unfortunately it broke down a lot, causing money to be wasted on repairs. The âWintergardenâ was the Kirbyâs first venture into the cinema business. It allowed them to experience the cinema business in all its forms, including maintenance, film supply and management. The âWintergardenâ was a small venture that was successful in showing the Kirbyâs cinemas ropes.

But it is this very trip that got the ball rolling that allowed George Kirbys sons to live and breath the cinema business, in all its glory.
