Martin Goodwille's article is a very relevant and modern one discussing the nature of the Australian film industry and how it continues to try and combat that of the American film industry. Though dated, the article continues to be relevant especially considering what is happening at this very moment. The highly anticipated and newly released 'The Avengers' just broke box office records making $650 million dollars within 10 days of opening world wide. That is an incredible sum and to be fair, this was not only a film, this was a spectacle. However what Goodwille brings up is that people of all international markets will happily line up for big American films ( in the modern age, booking tickets well in advance), while Australian films are always the " if there is nothing on option". The new film 'Wish you were here' gained critical acclaim at Sundance this year, however next to nobody is aware of the film in itself or its release date. Goodwille's comments on how Australian's need to focus on the word epic, rather than continuing to use the same dated material such as outback and racism stories such as the film September. The article is key in defining the different markets and offers further suggestions on how to engage with audiences.
