Comments This review was found the in Saturday Age – Good Weekend which would suggest that the intended audience is thinking adults, interested in pop culture with the desire to broaden their knowledge on the film ‘Somersault’ or gain any knowledge at all, if they had not heard of this film prior.

This article could be used as a reference for studies of the Australian Film Industry, aspects of Australian culture and geography that have a positive affect on the reception of the film and for different Australian films that have been successful and why.

This text would be valuable to those studying the effectiveness of Australian landscape on films. This text also discusses the importance of an Australian film being confident in their story telling and not depending on Australian clichés or caricatures.

I found that this article offers substantiated arguments for its case (having confidence in the storytelling and not focusing on Australian caricatures), by using several other Australian films as parallels.

This article does seem well researched, drawing on examples from several other films and explaining their relevance to ‘Somersault.’ Humphreys conveys a convincing argument by grouping various examples together, to give weight to his contention. Humphreys does have a particular bias though, he opens his article with a strong critical view of the Australian Film Industry, contending that the films that are made are usually made for the wrong reasons and targeted at the wrong audience. He proceeds to say that Somersault is a complete exception to this point of view. With his negative tone towards the Australian Film Industry from the outset, it doesn’t seem like Somersault has that much to compete with, which detracts from the strength of his argument.

The overall theme of Humphreys' article is that Australia has enough beauty in its’ natural environment for filmmakers to utilize without using exaggerated Australian caricatures. He argues that Australian filmmakers should focus on storytelling and find issues that the audience can relate to.
