Comments Michael Adams from SBS’ The Movie Show reviews Dr Plonk. Adams offers some critical analysis on this Rolf De Heer film, praising some of the casting choices, and De Heer’s chosen method of filming with a hand-cranked camera. This review is useful if you’re looking for a fair and balanced response to the film. Although the review is short, Adams successfully pinpoints a number of areas in which the film could’ve been improved, and justifies his claims.

Midway through the review Adams informs us, “In 1907 most older silent films were only one or two reelers”, and that Dr Plonk, is not justified as a feature length film. Adams suggests much more could have been done with the story, “with Australian history and time travel at his disposal”. The film goes for an hour and a half which can be long even for a normal talky film and De Heer seems to resort to a lot of repetition, which Adams picks up on. Justifying his critique, Adams suggests superimposition and colour tinting as useful techniques De Heer could have involved in the process.

This is a great critical analysis of Dr Plonk, and Adams gets a lot across in the designated two minute segment. He picks up on some very key weaknesses the film carries, but is fair enough to balance the good characteristics with the bad.
Synopsis In this review of Dr Plonk, Michael Adams of The Movie Show pin points the strengths and weaknesses of Rolf De Heer’s 2007 silent film.
