Comments This last piece of text is an interview conducted by Richard Phillips with Rolf De Heer, the director of the film. This text is intended to inform readers with firsthand ideas and concepts within the film, and why it is De Heer has created these as a means of expression. This text provides an insight into the production of the film, and why it was created. It also contains interesting notes about the film. For example, the entierity of the theme of the film, being ‘Ten Canoes’ was thought of when De Heer saw a photograph taken by Donald Thomson of ten men holding a canoe. This idea provides more depth within my own field, as the use of photographs are a great means of communicating the history and culture of Aboriginal people, which I intend to include as support to the film. The interesting take on this interview is how De Heer portrays the film as mor of a drama. It also goes into great detail on how the idea came about, and how he personally viewed the subject matter at the time he was making the film. De Heer’s view on the film aligns perfectly with my own field, where the idea of making people more aware of Aboriginal society is key, and being able to balance out Australian views on this is vital. De Heer brings to light a logical argument that Australians are ignorant about the complexities of Aboriginal society, and whats most interesting about the interview is De Heers compassion for Aboriginal people. He sees the film as a means of communication for them. Their whole lives they have often been told they are useless, therefore it is terribly important for Aboriginal people to say they have value through their story telling.
