Comments The entire book covers the many facets of Brunswick which make the city so bohemian and historic, however, chapter 32 (written by Laurie Cunningham) is a fascinating recall about the theatres of Brunswick. Most heavily focused upon is The Empire on Sydney Road, but the article makes mention of many cinemas such as the Liberty, the Alhambra, the Padua, the Lygon, the Western, the Oxford, the Lyric and many more (listed in the Venues below). Cunningham writes with an affectionate tone of a simpler time when a cinema was still new to some people, but concludes on the tragic fire which consumed the Empire Theatre in 1976.
Synopsis The chapter paints a clear picture of a glory which cinemas are destined to never reach again. The theatres of Brunswick have been emphatically represented by Laurie Cunningham, as the palaces they were.
