Comments The technicolour yarn is a unique yet and well-researched database specializing in ‘R-rated’ films from the 70’s and 80’s, as well as the cinemas first screened them. The database provides valuable information regarding the Century Cinema’s history as a newsreel-cinema (opening in the 1940s), its transformation into a specialized or adult cinema (in the 1960s), and its eventual demise in 1985 (now the Hifi Bar). Significantly, this database encourages reader participation via the comments section to expand upon the fading sources of information now available, which is especially significant for the Century as it no loner exists. In the comments section of the Century, Brian_J mentions that he used to work in the Century during the 1956 Melbourne Olympic games, and that many people who did not have the luxury of owning a television relied upon newsreels to watch the games. As such, the database serves a unique and personal forum for an audience. While this collaborative method of information gathering may be viewed as containing a subjective influence, and thus not absolutely accurate, it is an original initiative and effective method of capturing the existing memories of such lost relics. For my purposes, the database’s comments illustrate that the demise of newsreels can be attributed to the increasing affordability of televisions. Further, the database details the efforts in the late 1960s to recapture an audiences attention by providing more unusual and artistic films, both studio and independent. This database is directly targeted towards specialized or adult-cinema enthusiasts, and as such is especially significant for my purposes. Beyond a general overview, the database contains yearly information as to the films shown. However for the Century, the practical use is somewhat limited as it only contains the years 1970 and 1971. Notwithstanding of the fact, the database is an excellent source of ever expanding information in an often-neglected specialized area of Australian cinema. - Jarred Hofman
Synopsis The Technicolor Yawn is a comprehensive database with a direct focus towards films of the 1970s, and off-beat or 'R-rated' films. The database discusses venues and films relevant to the era/area in great depth. Additionally, the database encourages user contribution and is thus uniquely expanding.
