The âdrive-ins down-underâ is a highly personal and insightful guide focussed on Australian drive-in cinema. I found this website to be one of the most detailed accounts of the Panoramic cinema. An extensive historical overview of the cinema is provided in text, images and video, with information regarding the owners and operators of the cinemas provided extensively throughout all discussions. The cumulative effect of these differing types of information serves to lend credibility to the discussion. For my purposes, I was unaware of the extent that this cinema has transformed throughout its existence; established in 1956, closed in 1984 and reopened in 2002. While the database contains much information regarding the construction and establishment of the cinema, perhaps the greatest strength of this reference for my purposes was in its discussion of the content shown, and the types of audiences attending throughout its lifetime. The database makes mention of specific âR ratedâ films shown, such as âSweet Savageâ and âTerror Eyesâ, which serves to illustrate the shift in the cinemas focus towards violent and politically incorrect subject matter. Additionally, beyond the usual discussion attributing the popularity of television news being causative of the demise of newsreels and the emergence of specialized cinema, the impact of the VCR in the 1980s is acknowledged. The database is clearly an accurate well-researched source, however, further discussion on the types of audiences targeted and attending throughout the cinemas history would be of great use for my purposes. However, it is clear that this database is intended primarily as a historical overview, not an examination of audience or content, and in this regard it excels. - Jarred Hofman |
