For my purposes, I found the Filmbunnies-blog to be a highly entertaining and wonderfully informative overview of both the Star Theatre, and the content shown. It is important to note that this reference is an academicâs blogs, and as such, may not be perceived as reliable by some when compared to established or scholarly databases. However, of my research and for my purposes, I found this blog to be the most useful and comprehensive collection of information on the topic of specialized and adult cinema in Australia. I found that the informality of the article (which I actually find engaging and personal), lends itself perfectly for my purposes. The content extends beyond the usual generic historical overviews and activity focuses on a range of adult films and their creators. The blog discusses the demise of newsreels, crediting the popularity of television news. Further the blog explores the various newsreel cinemas unique methods of attracting new audiences before focusing specifically on the Star. It explores 4 different periods of the Stars content, ranging from the full-feature era of 1963-1971, to the âRâ rated era still existing today. Additionally, the article discusses the cultural and cinematic content of the new specialized content. Specifically, the blog discusses the various films and emerging popular-culture surrounding Mondo Shlock. This provides insight into the shifting demands, and new types of audiences, which emerged in the absence of newsreels. While the blogâs author may be influenced by the romantic perceptions of B-grade films and risqué content, his academic status and obvious expertise in the area are always plainly evident in the blogâs discussion. Despite its informality, in its entirety, this blog is truthfully one of the more complex and well-researched contributions to an often-neglected area of Australian film history. - Jarred Hofman |
