Comments Nine years before the demolition of the Temperance Hall/Imperial Theatre/Savoy Theatre building, this may have been one of the first reason why the building was no longer suitable for public screenings. The Health Commission inspected the Savoy Theatre and ordered its management to "increase the number of exits; make lights brighter; instal 'automatic panic bolts' on doors, and increase sanitary accommodation." There may have been many factors that contributed to the Savoy Theatre's demolition in 1963, but I feel that this may been the first concern that accumulated into many and lead to the demise of a great old building. At this point in time, the building was just over 100 years old, and it clearly did not meet the standards of its contemporary theatres. Personally, this clipping represents the demise of the Savoy, though I will need further inquiry in order to ascertain the exact reasoning behind the demotion.
