In this article, the writer Te Pana praises the artistic merit of foreign language films, specifically those of France, Germany and Russia. He contrasts these 'continental' films with the formulaic offerings from Hollywood, admonishing their romanticism, sentimentality and simplistic acting. Continuing from this basis, he excitedly mentions the opening of the Savoy Theatre (which took place four days later), and the foreign films to be screened, such as "La Kermesse Heroique," "La Grand Illusion" and "Liebelei."
This article is useful to me as it is the basis of my research question. It demonstrates that there was interest in Melbourne for 'continental' films. These films seemed to be the future of the cinematic medium that expressed a greater range of emotion than mainstream British and Hollywood films. As the article mentions, it was impossible to see foreign films in Australia, and the only option before the Savoy was to travel overseas to watch them. This represents an important moment for the movie-going public of Melbourne. |
